The Department of Public Safety seeks to promote safety through citizen outreach. Here residents will find information and resources that encourage them to take an active role in protecting themselves and their neighbors' property.

The Department of Public Safety is located in City Hall on Oak Park Boulevard. There are 67 full-time officers, who are cross-trained as both police officers and fire fighters. Duties of each discipline are performed by all officers. The Department has 11 police-marked patrol units, and four fire trucks. The Emergency Services Council, a nine-person committee made up of four citizens, a City Council Representative, the Director of Public Information, Director of Public Safety, Director of Public Works, and the Emergency Services Coordinator, meet once a month to discuss policy and formulate recommendations regarding emergency services that are passed on to the City Council.

The Public Safety Department responds to more than 21,000 calls each year, including police, fire and emergency medical.

The City participates in both police and fire mutual aid, which provides additional assistance to/from surrounding communities in the event of a major emergency or a shortage of equipment or personnel.

The Department of Public Safety operates a variety of citizen outreach programs. The Neighborhood Awareness Programs, for instance, encourage residents to take an active role in protecting themselves and their neighbors' property. The Department promotes fire safety in October – Fire Safety Month – by visiting the elementary and middle schools and provides other school programs throughout the year. Information and public presentations are given on a variety of subjects to the public on request

Oak Park Police Officers Association Fundraising Activity

A union representing some of Oak Park's Public Safety personnel has hired a fundraising company to solicit monetary contributions for the the union.  These fundraising activities may include telemarketing and direct mail.  The City of Oak Park and the Department of Public Safety DO NO SOLICIT money from residents to provide service.  The City of Oak Park and the Department of Public Safety HAVE NOT AUTHORIZED any fundraising activity.  These fundraising activities DO NOT BENEFIT the City, the Department of Public Safety or the level of service that the Department provides.

The City of Oak Park is located near the southeast corner of Oakland County, contains approximately 5.5 square miles with a population of 29,793 as reported by the U.S. Bureau of Census for 2000.  The Department of Public Safety is a consolidated Police and Fire Department.  All officers are cross-trained and perform both functions.  The Department has seventy sworn Officers and fourteen civilian employees.

Requirements

Applicants must have successfully completed 60 semester hours of college credit, the equivalent of a beginning third year college student.
Applicants must be eligible for certification as provided in Public Act 203 as amended.  The act bans individuals convicted of misdemeanor crimes involving domestic violence from owning or possessing a firearm. Law Enforcement Officers are specifically not exempted from this prohibition.
Applicants must have taken and passed the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES), pre-employment tests. There are two MCOLES tests: a written test, and a physical agility test. The applicant is responsible for making the reservations for the MCOLES tests and paying the fees for the MCOLES tests. Applicants must submit the official results of the MCOLES testing and, if applicable, current MCOLES certification. 
Applicants must be able to successfully complete the required police-training curriculum at a MCOLES police academy and be deemed certifiable upon graduation. Preference will be given to applicants who have graduated from or are currently attending a MCOLES police academy.
Applicants must have the ability to successfully complete the basic fire-training curriculum at a Firefighter Training Council approved school, and successfully attain Firefighters Level II certification.
