Today, Oak Park's Library is more than a collection of books, periodicals, audio and video tapes for the public to borrow. It has also developed into the community’s center for cultural events ranging from concerts and art exhibits to special children’s events. Moreover, today’s patrons also have computer access to the holding of more than 50 other area libraries.

The Library houses more than 2,000 Russian and Arabic language books. The Oak Park Public Library is a member of The Library Network, a consortium of over 55 members libraries located in Wayne, Oakland, Livingston and Washtenaw Counties. These libraries are linked by computer so that patrons can quickly discover which materials are available at other libraries. The Library is connected to the Internet.

Friends of the Oak Park Library:

The Friends of the Oak Park Library want you to join us as our partner. We are members of the community who volunteer our time and effort to provide support to the library for educational programs, physical improvements in our library and to encourage the overall enjoyment of reading.

Who are the Friends of the Oak Park Library? The Friends of the Oak Park Library was founded in the mid-1950s prior to the opening of the Library in June 1958. Its purpose was to provide "support of the library, broader understanding of what the library offers, and wider use of the library by more people." Volunteers went door-to-door soliciting members, money and materials. Through their efforts over $24,000 was raised to provide funding for most of the library's furniture and equipment.

Over the years the Friends have donated thousands of dollars to the Library to enhance its collections, building and services. In 2002 the Friends donated more than $11,000 to the Library to completely revamp one of the Library’s rooms into a magazine/newspaper reading room. This is in addition to the numerous children’s programs offered during the year and the almost $4,000 donated to the Library in 2001 to purchase interactive educational games for the Children’s area!

We need your support and many new members to achieve our goals. We thank you in advance for your membership participation. We meet the first Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in Room 4 of the Community Center. See you there
